Youth and Adult Correctional Services Glossary
Hello! As you know, I am studying Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention. I made a glossary of 20 important words related to this field of study because it could be important for others that would like to study in this field or for additional vocabulary. The reason why I chose those words it's because since I am a francophone, it helped me to understand the meaning of those English words. There is a list of 20 word people use in this field:
agent
A person or thing that acts or has the power to act.
correctionnal officer
An officer responsible for the custody, safety, security, and supervision of inmates in a prison or any other correctionnal facility.
correctionnal plan
An analysis of a prisoner's social and psychological shortcomings - the things driving his anti-social behaviour - and a list of the "intervention" programs that the prisoner must participate in, in order to be eligible for release.
delinquency
Failure to do what law or duty requires.
detox treatments
Treatment designed to rid the body of poisonous substances, especially alcohol and drugs.
halfway house
A place to allow convicted criminals to begin the process of reintergration with the society.
handcuff
A ring-shaped metal device that can be locked around a person's wrist, usually one of a pair connected by a short chain or linked bar; shackle.
impartial
Not biased; fair.
isolation
The complete separation from others.
marginal
Participating only slightly in the life of two cultural groups without feeling identified with either group.
mental health
The psychological state of someone who is functioning a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment.
offender
Someone who violates or transgresses a law.
penitentiary
A prison for those convicted of major crimes -2 years + -.
prison
A building for the confinement of persons held while awaiting trial or after conviction - 2 years- -.
prisoner
A person legally held in prison as a punishment for crimes they have committed or while awaiting trial.
rehabilitation
The restoration of someone to a condition of health or useful and constructive activity.
sentence
A judicial judgment and determination of the punishment to be inflicted on a convicted criminal.
social rehabilitation
The re-intergration of a convicted person into society to help them stop reoffending.
therapy
The treatment of disease or disorders.
victim
Person who has experienced a personal injure.
